- New $25 million North Las Vegas Readiness Center opens

NORTH LAS VEGAS -- Although the temperature approached summer-like triple digits here Tuesday, some Soldiers in the Nevada Army Guard said it felt more like December after the rbbon cutting ceremony that marked the opening of the North Las Vegas Readiness Center.Located at 6600 Range Road in North Las Vegas, the readiness center provides administrative, training, storage, educational and support space for the six units as well as military and civilian vehicle parking. About 80 acres of training lands surround the North Las Vegas Readiness Center, which is adjacent to the Floyd Edsall Readiness Center.

- Gilliam is nation’s top assistant chaplain

RENO — It’s not an overstatement to say Tech. Sgt. Shay Gilliam is a blessing to the Nevada Air National Guard.
Gilliam, a 152nd Airlift Wing chaplain’s assistant, received the Air National Guard 2012 Chaplain’s Assistant of the Year award this spring. He was selected for the award ahead of every other assistant Air Guard chaplain in the nation largely for his work in the Nevada Guard’s Strong Bonds program.

Home for less than a week following its 11-month deployment to Afghanistan, the eastern Nevada detachment of the 593rd Transportation Company began to call the new Elko County Readiness Center here “home” April 18 following the official ceremony marking the completion of the 5,376-square-foot center. The ceremony also marked the Nevada Guard’s assumption of the 460 acre campus here that was formerly the University of Nevada, Reno’s, Fire Science Academy.

- Aviation unit, flag formally back in governor’s presence

RENO – Before the Nevada Army National Guard’s 189th General Support Aviation Battalion deployed to Afghanistan last year, Gov. Brian Sandoval gave the unit a signed state flag to take with them to the war-torn country.
Company commander Capt. Michael Bordallo, though, returned the favor at the unit's official demobilization ceremony March 23 in Reno when Bordallo presented Nevada's commander in chief with the same flag.
