Army Basic Instructor Course
ABIC (previously called Total Army Instructor Training Course (TAITC) or Instructor Basic Course) is a 10-day (80-hour) comprehensive course that trains U.S. Army instructors (Active/Reserve Component/Department of the Army (DA) civilians/DA defense contractors) to deliver battle-focused training/education in The Army School System (TASS). ABIC consists of planning, preparing, and presenting Army training/education. The basic method for Army instructors is previewing and presenting the task, practicing the task, and performing the task to standard during evaluation. This method is enhanced during the course by applying a variety of presentation and practice methods and training techniques. The course also addresses how instructors motivate Soldiers and solve Soldier performance problems using positive reinforcement, on-the-spot corrections, and Soldier counseling. ABIC is designed for delivery in the traditional classroom setting or via video teletraining.
Student evaluation is conducted through student performance of required instructor skills. Students must present instruction using the Conference, Demonstration, and Practical Exercise (PE) methods of instruction. Presentations are evaluated using a Performance Evaluation Checklist (PEC). In order to complete the course successfully, students must achieve a “GO” on the final PE by presenting a combination of the Conference, Demonstration, and PE methods of instruction and facilitating an AAR following another student's presentation in accordance with the PEC. Upon successful completion of ABIC, students become qualified Army instructors, meet the course requirement for award of the Instructor identifier, and receive a certificate of course completion.
The following are minimum requirements to attend SGITC:
- Assignment or pending assignment as an instructor.
- Must meet APFT standards IAW FM 21-20.
- Must meet height weight standards IAW AR 600-9.
