Nevada Soldier tops national field in 2017 Best Warrior Competition

CAMP RIPLEY, Minn. — Nevada Army Guard Sgt. Grant Reimers emerged from the national field here in the 2017 Army National Guard Best Warrior Competition to earn the title of Army Guard Soldier of the Year. Reimers, of Reno, a heavy vehicle operator with the Nevada Army National Guard"s 1859th Transportation Company, was named Soldier of the Year while Army Staff Sgt. Daniel Sebo, a combat medic with the Minnesota Army National Guard"s 2nd Battalion, 175th Regiment (Regional Training Institute), was named the NCO of the Year.

CARSON CITY – Although lacking some of the excitement of his first military job as a Marine Corps machine gunner, Maj. Geir Gabrielson’s latest military assignment carries far more responsibility: He’s now the commander of Joint Force Headquarters, the Nevada Army Guard’s largest unit in the Capital City that provides logistical and training support to the state’s more than 3,200 National Guard Soldiers.

The current homebound status of the Nevada Army is a sharp contrast to autumn 2015, when more than 460 Nevada Soldiers were deployed abroad.

RENO -- Sgt. Sam Hunt of the Nevada Army Guard’s G Company, 2/238th General Support Aviation Battalion, is the first openly transgender Soldier in the Nevada National Guard and is a proponent of the Dept. of Denfense's upcoming policy that gender status is not a disqualifying factor from enlistment in the military.
